Sex and Soapies

We spend hours in front of the television everyday and never consider how far from ‘reality’ these shows are. Yes, they are entertaining, but real, they are not. Just look at soap operas for example. Have you ever noticed how far fetched soap operas are? If you forget about the unrealistic plots and characters and just focus on the love and sexual relationships you will realise how warped their portrayal of ‘reality’ really is.

Female characters who are hell bent on “bagging a man”, who will go to any measure (lying, manipulation, fake pregnancies and adultery). Do these women have no pride? And as teenagers, we sometimes find this type of lifestyle appealing and can imitate these behaviours without even realising it. These women are not the kinds of role models we need to help us develop who we are. The thing is, we don’t consciously want to learn from television. However with the constant reinforcement of these images and behaviour and our human nature, we become susceptible to a change in attitude.

Excerpt from the Bold and the Beautiful

Brooke: All I ever did, Stephanie, was to love Ridge.

Stephanie: And his father, and his brother, and your son-in-law. Is it any wonder Bridget is confused? I mean, is it any wonder your daughter would confuse natural feelings of respect and affection for romance? You have blurred the lines of socially-acceptable behaviour. And you stand here and you tell me you're proud. What are you proud of? Having your son-in-law's baby? I know what you're proud of. Chasing after a man whose wife's body is barely cold in the ground.

Yes indeed warped nonsense... but in the excerpt Stephanie is voicing your opinon, and bring sense to a nonsensical character such as Brooke thus trying to instill a small quoter of reality... So why then do you feel we only learn from the one character and not the other???

The way i look at it is that it comes down to bad parenting and bad television planning.
Firstly those shows are ridiculous in terms of plot and secual content.
Then the television stations air these shows around the 5pm mark. Working parents only get home around the 6pm mark. So why air these shows at such an early time. Rather air them at a time where television is monitored by parents.

On another note parents dont really care anymore. its a sad reality that parents allow their kids to basically do what they want in modern society. it comes down to a rushed life which to me is an excuse.

Television on a whole needs to be looked at in terms of scheduling

The way I see it, its not tv that makes a person, I mean everybody argues that sex and violence influences people to behave in this manner, if this is the case, then why doesn’t the same hold true for educational tv? Why is it that we as viewers can only pick up the bad behaviour portrayed in movies and not the good?? At the end of the day its not tv shows that make people volient, the world and life is not easy and there are so many more significant issues in a person’s world that could turn them to this bad behaviour, instead of blaming it on something as trivial as tv?! In my opinion a lot more good comes from tv than bad.. I really can’t bring myself to think that censoring tv shows will reduce violence and/or bad behaviour!

Children shouldn't be allowed to watch such nonsense. There is no possible benefit that one can derive by watching these shows. It is a complete shift away from reality, and not in a positive manner.
